Sales Tax Rate in the City of El Cajon
8.25% effective January 1, 2017
As of January 1, 2017, the sales tax rate in the City of El Cajon decreased from 8.50% to 8.25%. The decrease is due to the State Voter-approved Proposition 30, The Schools and Local Public Safety Protection Act of 2012, which imposed the one quarter of one percent (0.25 percent) temporary statewide sales and use tax rate which expired December 31, 2016.
The 8.25% sales tax rate for the City of El Cajon includes the City Voter-approved Proposition J, Preservation of Essential City Services, which imposes an one half of one percent (0.50 percent) citywide sales and use tax rate which expires on March 31, 2029.
Upon expiration of Proposition J, Measure J, El Cajon Critical Services Ordinance, will take effect. Measure J—approved by voters on November 5, 2024—continues the one-half of one percent (0.50 percent) citywide sales and use tax rate for twenty years, expiring on March 31, 2049. Pursuant to the stipulations of Measure J, formulation of the Independent Citizens’ Oversight Committee will occur as the expiration of Proposition J approaches.
