TYPE OF INCIDENT: Man arrested for homicide

DATE AND TIME OF INCIDENT: 08/30/2025 5:30 PM

LOCATION OF INCIDENT: 900 block of S. Sunshine, El Cajon

RESUME OF INCIDENT:

On Saturday evening, two males were in an altercation in an apartment complex parking lot.  During the altercation, one of the males stabbed the other male, causing severe injury.  The victim was transported to the hospital, where he later died.  The suspect was located on scene and was arrested.

Police identified the suspect as 29 year old Steven Matthews from La Mesa.  He has extensive criminal history including arrests for assault with a deadly weapon and firearm charges.

The victim is a 59 year old male from El Cajon whose identity is not being released.
